Marion Mayfield-Johnson
Creative Retirement Planning by World Traveler Benefits UNC Asheville, Other Charities
After an exciting career that took her around the world, Marion Mayfield-Johnson and her late husband, Journalist Mack Johnson, decided that both helping others and securing their own retirement years were important goals.
Marion Mayfield-Johnson established a charitable remainder unitrust (CRUT) after her husband's death, and the unitrust that benefits her now will one day benefit many UNC Asheville students.
"Since we married later in life and did not have children, we thought we wanted to do something that would help other people's children with their educations," Marion said.

J. Alfred Miller
J. Alfred Miller, long time supporter of Asheville-Biltmore College and the University of North Carolina at Asheville, died on November 29, 2003. Details of Mr. Miller’s trust arrangement benefiting the University as well as Montreat College have now been announced, and the two colleges will divide yearly interest from more than $2 million in a perpetual trust. In concert with Mr. Miller’s desires, the proceeds, estimated for UNC Asheville to be more than $35,000 annually, will provide scholarships to benefit students from Buncombe, Henderson, and Madison Counties of North Carolina. These scholarships will be for deserving students who demonstrate financial need, merit, or a combination of both.
Mr. Miller was president of Miller Printing Company from 1930 to 1971. It later became Daniels Graphics. He was involved in many civic activities and served as a trustee of Asheville-Biltmore College between 1958 and 1963. He was instrumental in the growth of that institution into a four year college, and he was presented with the Chancellor’s Medallion in 1990.
